Monique’s ripped arms and competitive demeanor were an immediate sign that we were about to get our butts kicked. This was unlike any SoulCycle class we’ve taken, and there’s only one word to describe it: FAST. From Kaskade to Disclosure, EDM remixes were abundant. And the studio was super chic…like everything in Chelsea!
If you’re looking to get your heart rate up and have an exhilarating night, then you must try Mo’s 6:30PM class. It was enough to keep our hearts thumping for hours after class. At times, the pace bordered on manic: there were no hills and only light choreography, but there were A LOT of long sprints…hope that’s your thing!
Caution: if you’re a first timer, we recommend taking a seat in the second or third rows and going at your own pace if you can’t keep up. Never sacrifice those knees.
Badass and difficult best describes Mo. Her go-to mot is “We don’t wake up to give up” and that vibe definitely came through. Unlike some other spin instructors, she rode the whole class and was sweating just as much as us riders. Mo inspired us through her actions, continuously challenging us to push harder and faster. Don’t expect to kick back in this class because Mo. Don’t. Stop.
The Chelsea location is flawless – with perfectly swept floors and a spacious layout, we could’ve hung out there for hours. There was an abundance of regulars chatting outside the studio before class kicked off. The studio has 58 bikes and in Mo’s class, every seat was taken. There are men’s and women’s locker rooms with 4 showers in each with bathroom stalls. It is spacious and clean. There are lockers outside of the bathrooms with built in locks. Although the locker rooms are spacious, we still recommended hopping out of class a song early to shower if in a rush.

“You don’t come here to change who you are, you come here to become a better you.” This is the motto Austin leads by. He encouraged riders to reach their inner selves. He guided us to breathe and made us more aware of our bodies. He did this by asking questions that made us think deeply as we were riding to the beat. His seductive eyes and soft voice drew us in immediately. He brought a spiritual style to class that grounded us and somehow made us forget what was going on in the outside world. Austin bounced around the room, performing crazy dance moves on and off the bike – he kept riders motivated and moving for 45-minutes.
We tapped it back, sprinted, jumped, and pushed up. Austin incorporated the perfect amount of choreo. We biked to Eminem and some amazing EDM beats and got lost in the music! Don’t forget to drink water, though, because he sure as hell won’t remind you.

Sometimes trying a new instructor at SoulCycle can be daunting – we totally get it. However, it shouldn’t deter you, especially if that instructor happens to be Claire J. Claire’s class started out with a proper warmup and though it began a bit on the slower side, the resistance and pace varied throughout the class and she tricked us into getting a hard workout. Claire was a supportive instructor from start to finish and kept us motivated to push through when the going got tough. We will definitely be taking more of Claire’s classes!

Marvin has a calming, even-keeled energy. He immediately makes you feel you are in a safe, judgement-free zone. He coaches throughout class with a steady dialogue focused on form and is big on visualization. He asked us to think about and see the muscle groups we were engaging on almost everything we did. No matter how experienced/inexperienced you are, being coached on form and how to make necessary adjustments is critical to becoming a stronger, more conditioned rider.
The ride was heavy on resistance and tested our endurance. There were few fast “flush” songs and limited breaks so his class is not for the faint of heart if you keep up with all of his commands. The arms series was demanding on our entire upper body; even our abs were on fire.
Marvin has a limited schedule but if you can get to his class, your form will thank you!
