Justin had a soft approach, which caught us by surprise given his jacked build and gym rat demeanor. His non-aggressive style had the class lacking energy at times. We could’ve used a little extra motivation to get us moving at 7AM. That said, we had fun dancing and his music choices were upbeat. The front desk workers were nice but the overall experience was not client-centric. For $27 a class, we would’ve expected a little more from the staff. The studio is located in BSC Lab, and bathrooms and locker rooms are shared. This can be problematic if you are running off to a meeting and need a quick shower!
In Justin’s class, you can expect light choreography with two rounds of arms (yes, the weights are sandbags). The arms section was difficult and had an interesting twist: We rowed front and back like we were in a canoe, which seems easy but it wasn’t. As for the ride itself, he kept the dance moves simple: tap backs and obliques. He also loved to sprint. Justin had us sprinting in the saddle for four seconds and out of the saddle for four seconds. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. This was the name of the game. Our advice: keep turnin’ that knob to the right.
Justin was soft spoken and composed, which is not the style we typically look for in a spin instructor. He could’ve done a better job commanding the room and bringing the riders together. While this wasn’t the most challenging spin class, it was balanced, which we enjoyed. We rode 50% in the saddle and 50% out of the saddle.
Cyc Chelsea is in BSC Lab which is centrally located to the 1, 2, 3, L, F and M subways. The studio doesn’t offer the boutique fitness experience we hoped to have. Additionally, Bike 33 (our bike) was next to a large column so we were blocked from seeing anyone to the left of us, which made the class less cohesive. Shoes and towels were complimentary. Warning: the towels were thin and rough on the face.
The women’s locker room has three showers and the lockers have built-in locks. The locker room was an 8 out of 10 on a cleanliness scale. Amenities included towels, shampoo/conditioner, and blow-dryers, and hair ties were available at the front desk.
