We can’t promise you that you won’t be intimidated walking into Crossfit TILT in Waltham, especially if you’ve never been to a CrossFit gym before. You will most likely see a few shirtless men; perhaps some of the women will have muscles too. You may see some dudes with beards and tattoos… But don’t let any of those visuals deter you from trying CrossFit TILT Waltham because, intimidating looks aside, every member is ready to welcome you with open arms. We believe this to be a direct product of the man that built and captains the ship, co-owner and head coach Max Isaak.

RUNDOWN

WORKOUT

Class runs for an hour but on any given day the workout can range from 30 minutes to 5 minutes. Trust us though, no matter what the time domain is, you are going to get your money’s worth. After a warm up which includes mobility, movement demonstrations, and few test runs, we were primed and ready. The workout of the day was to complete 5 rounds of 3 minute AMRAPS (as many reps as possible) of 3 overhead squats, 6 light kettlebell swings and 9 box jumps – simple yet super effective. The goal was to get our heart rate jacked up and hang on for dear life. And that we did.

INSTRUCTOR

If you were ever wondering what the word “community” means we’d recommend taking a trip to CrossFit TILT. When you walk in the door, morning, noon or night, you will be greeted (usually by name) by Max. If he doesn’t know your name the chances are that he will learn it within the next minute. That’s just the kind guy that Max is. Every member in and out of the gym is loved, cared for, given the attention they deserve.

Max Isaak has been coaching CrossFit for over 5 years and it shows. His classes are filled with humor and laughs. But he doesn’t let that take away from his attention to points of performance, clear commands, and providing scaling options for all class participants. He’s no drill sergeant but if you are struggling (or sucking wind like us) he knows how to give you a push and get you moving. If you’re lucky, you might even get a little motivation speech at the end of class like we did. Good way to start a Friday.

SPACE

We’ve been to our fair share of CrossFit gyms in our lives and (and every other type of gym for that matter). CrossFit TILT ups the game. A free-standing building that was built from scratch for the specific purpose to be a CrossFit gym, TILT is intimate by design. It is only 3,000 square feet which in the CrossFit world is on the smaller side. Located right off 128 in Waltham it is easily accessible for many locations. Walking in the front door you will be greeted by a reception desk and dumped directly onto the workout floor. So if you hadn’t seen CrossFit before, you will quickly get your first view. The gym is essentially a wide open space. The upstairs (yes, they have two floors) has locker rooms for both men and women. Each locker room has two showers along with lockers, bathrooms and amenities to help you get ready for work. While you’re showering you might catch a whiff of fresh brewed coffee – that is because there is always a fresh pot of some expensive craft roaster waiting for you. We’d highly suggest having a cup in the cafe.
