We’ve been longtime fans of Flywheel’s barre classes and the variety of formats they have. Most recently, they added FlyFIT to the class roster and we couldn’t wait to try it out! If you’ve ever taken Flybarre’s classic Barre class or sport class, FlyFIT felt like an amped up mix of both. There’s a little bit of everything in this class, toning, cardio, and strength training- all the ingredients for a well-rounded and challenging workout.

RUNDOWN

WORKOUT

A few differences in this class from their others is that sneakers are required and heavier weights are used. Grabbing 3 sets of weights ranging from 8-15lbs (other options available) we found our assigned mat. We have to note how much we love the designated spaces in a Fly class so there’s no questions about personal space. Class kicked off with a warm up to get the blood flowing and we were off. HIIT drills including high knees, squat jumps, burpees and lunge jumps were followed by slower sections using heavier weights. Each of the cardio bursts seemed to break up the sections of focus, which included; abs, glutes, thighs, arms, and ass. Using the heavy weights for strength training we did various movements including bicep curls, tricep curls, chest presses, squats, lunges, jack knives and bicycles.. to name a few. Each movement was timed out so just as you were hitting your limit it was time for the next, leaving little time to really think about the burn. There was also little time between each movement, once class starts the vibe is all game on.

INSTRUCTOR

Kara Liotta is crazy- in the best way!! Forget the fact that she looks like a superhuman making everything look easy but she’s as high energy as they come. Kara’s so welcoming and makes you excited to be in class. She was smiling through it all, demonstrating and doing class alongside us-motivating us to keep going. We would highly recommend grabbing a spot in Kara’s class, not only will you get a killer workout but the chance to experience one of the ultimate FlyFIT experiences as she is also a Flywheel Master Instructor.

SPACE

Flywheel Flatiron recently had a facelift and the new renovations are a welcomed upgrade. There are separate Men’s and Women’s locker rooms as well as a wall of several lockers outside the studios. The locker rooms are clean and modern with all the necessary amenities to choose from. This studio is more spacious than several others we’ve visited in the city and holds a flywheel and barre studio with enough space between the two to avoid class overflow getting too crowded. If you don’t grab a complimentary piece of fruit on your way out, the Flatiron location is conveniently located next to several restaurant hot spots.. perfect for the much deserved brunch or dinner you’ll deserve after class.
