FlyBarre builds on the competitive vibes of the whole FlyWheel family to create an intense barre workout that’s driven by music.
This class was super difficult in a good way, with more time pushing our feet against the wall than any other barre class we’d been to. We started off with some standard marches in place but were quickly impressed by how many different compound movements Daniella led us through. Everything felt designed to really stress and tone our abs and butt, from an early side plank series to a squat/lunge compound move that was disguised as an ab exercise.
Instead of the standard arms-legs-butt-abs sequence, Daniella had different tricks up her sleeve for each song that was played, which varied from hip hop to recent top 40 to a few remixes. It felt like each separate exercise had a new prop to use, from two different stretchy bands, 3 different weights, a ball, and of course Daniella’s favorite prop, the wall. There was little time spent in the traditional barre position, which we would have preferred. While we worked hard in class, it sometimes felt like we were just doing each exercise with poor technique. We were sweaty and very tired at the end of class, and found that the unpredictability of the exercise helped class go by very quickly. We were surrounded by very fit people in this class, and the general vibe of classgoers was mid-twenties professional – this surprised us, given that it was 11 am on a Wednesday. Perhaps everyone else was also on summer vacation!
Daniella was supportive and very intense, telling us the story of how she took her first FlyBarre class and found it so challenging that she didn’t return for a year. We get it – we thought it was hard too! She picked really high-tempo music for each song that helped the difficult exercises go by quickly. Daniella was quick and pretty matter of fact for explaining each exercise, but also relied a lot on demonstrating new movements. We found her a little hard to follow just because the class moved so quickly, but were glad she wasn’t stopping to cater to beginners. Her positivity was infectious and we felt like we learned a lot in class.
The studio is spacious compared to other FlyWheel studios in Manhattan – and there’s a FlyWheel and FlyBarre studio. Once you enter, you’ll be greeted immediately by the upbeat and helpful staff but we recommend using the self-service iPads for a more seamless check-in. The FlyWheel and FlyBarre classes are staggered to avoid bathroom/shower backup. There are separate men’s and women’s locker rooms as well as individual changing rooms and bathrooms. The studio is amenity heavy and has some stellar apparel that is worth checking out. Water, spin shoes, and some fresh fruit included. Count us in!
