WHY DID YOU BECOME A FITNESS INSTRUCTOR?

I’ve always loved fitness. I was a dancer starting at age 3 through my college years, so the love of movement was inside me from a very young age.

When I was a kid, my dad would take my sister and I to the gym and I thought it was such a cool place. He exercised daily, running outside or on the treadmill, never treating fitness like it was a chore. My mom had Jane Fonda’s workout tapes and my sister and I would follow along with her. After it was over, we would “play” Jane Fonda, bouncing around in leotards and leg warmers motivating one another through each pony and step ball change. God I wish someone videotaped us.

When I wasn’t dancing, I was running, at the gym or doing Tammy Lee Webb’s Abs of Steel at home (dead serious). Some kids grow up wanting to be firemen, doctors, teachers… my childhood dream was to be an aerobics instructor… close enough, right? 🙂

FAVORITE GO-TO PUMP UP SONG?

P!NK’s F**kin’ Perfect is just so good. Great beat, great message.

FIRST GROUP FITNESS CLASS?

Step aerobics at the gym! The instructor’s name was Lucille!

FAVORITE MOVIE?

I’m a sucker for a good Rom-Com but I don’t really have a favorite movie, just lots of favorite binge worthy shows like Ray Donovan and Homeland.

FIRST JOB?

I had a small stint at Abdows when I was 14, filling and refilling the buffet table and salad bar while dressed in a polyester skirt and nude nylons but my first real job was at a frozen yogurt place called Freshens at the Auburn Mall. I loved that job.

HOMETOWN?

Auburn Mass!

FAVORITE JUNK FOOD?

haha I’ll eat anything. I love chips of all kinds, brownies, cookies… I’m a huge fan of Sweet Cupcakes.

FAVORITE RESTAURANT?

If we want something quick, my husband and I will eat at Barlow’s. Its casual, hearty food and you can always get a seat at the bar. Our dog is named Barlow after this place!

We eat out in the South End a lot too… Stella is always a good go-to spot but for a date night, we try to pick a newer restaurant that we haven’t been to yet. Most recently, we went to Banyan and loved it. The roasted cauliflower was my favorite!

PERFECT SUNDAY AFTERNOON?

I wake up without an alarm, drink my coffee out of a mug while sitting on the couch with my husband and dog. I eat a delicious breakfast, maybe pancakes with lots of syrup and turkey bacon then (once digested) head to a 90 minute yoga class. The rest of the day is up in the air… Maybe walking around Boston, shopping or heading to Blue Hills for a hike. My favorite Sundays are the ones where I have no agenda or commitments.

FAVORITE WORKOUT GEAR?

I’m over 6 months pregnant now (it’s going by so fast!) so my favorite workout gear has changed a little. 🙂 I used to love my lower rise lululemon Wunder Unders but now the high rise pants seem to fit a little better. They have some give to them and are made really well so they fit me with or without my baby bump! The cool racerback tanks from lulu are my favorite tanks to wear while teaching spin or yoga. They’re comfortable and great for a sweaty workout!

WON’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT?

My water bottle, a snack, my phone and wallet.

GUILTY PLEASURE?

Ugh, the show Teen Mom. I can’t stop… it’s a problem.

FAVORITE PLACE TO SWEAT WHEN YOU AREN’T TEACHING?

I love practicing yoga at other studios and taking class from other teachers but I always love sweating with my peers at YogaWorks and The Handle Bar.

IN TEN YEARS I WILL BE _____?

10 years is a long time from now! I’m sure I’ll still be teaching but my teaching will shift dramatically just as it has changed from 10 years ago. I’ll have more knowledge, different priorities, a 10 year old child to look after! (That’s crazy!) I think it’s great to set goals but I want to keep doing what I’m doing now… following a path that feels good and right in this moment. I trust it will take me in the right direction.

HAVE TOO MUCH OF?

Chips. We have about 15 bags of random chips in the cabinet right now.

MORE ESSENTIAL: WATER OR COFFEE?

I love my coffee in the morning but I only have the one cup. I HAVE to have water on me at all times. I must drink about a gallon a day.

GETS YOU OUT OF BED IN THE MORNING?

LIFE! Sometimes I get tired like everyone else and would love to sleep another hour or so but I love what I do so it’s easy to get moving.

FAVORITE VACATION SPOT?

Last year, we went to Bimini, a Bahamian island only an hour an half from Fort Lauderdale by boat. Everything from the resort to the water, the service, the mudslides… all a 10. Once the baby comes, I’d love to get back there!

WHO INSPIRES YOU?

My students inspire me every day. It’s no small task to physically get your body up and moving and I really want each of my students to realize how big of a deal it is that they do this for themselves. I feel really proud of all of them for the commitment they’ve made to themselves and so incredibly inspired. These amazing people make me want to work harder and smarter every day.
