Having spent a lot of our time in NYC south of 14th Street, we didn’t know what to expect when we ventured to the Upper West Side for Physique 57, but let us tell you: the studio and the UWS charmed us. The studio is steps from the 123 train and, like all Physique locations, is super clean and big. Katie’s class was an athletic and creative take on the traditional class structure.

RUNDOWN

WORKOUT

When selecting a barre class in NYC, there are almost as many options as there are pizza joints. Physique 57 is certainly at the top of the list. The instructors are top notch, each class follows the same fast-paced pattern, and the studios have everything you need. Physique 57 is a true full body workout, targeting arms, thighs, seat and of course abs. The workout is challenging, but you get the hang of it quickly. Each workout starts with anywhere from 10-15 minutes of arm work. Just when you feel as though your arms are going to fall off, it’s on to the next move and before you know it, you’re moving on to a quick set of pushups and plank work. The heart of the workout comes when you move to the barre and get into the thigh and seat work. Your legs and booty will be on fire as you do two sets of each, but the good news is that there are a few quick stretch breaks in between to get you through it. When you get to the last three ab sets, you can see the light at the end of the tunnel, and it’s worth fighting through.

Word of wisdom: you need to wear grip socks in each class so make sure to pack them if you have them. If you don’t own a pair, you can pick some up at the front desk.

INSTRUCTOR

Katie’s class was tough! The arm, leg and seat parts of class were particularly challenging for us! We got a little ahead of our skis at the start of class and selected weights which were way too heavy. She won us over when she quietly came over and gave us more appropriate weights without embarrassing us in front of the entire class. The class left us breathless and wanting to scream at points, but Katie’s upbeat, attentive and motivating attitude got us through it.  Not to mention her killer bod definitely served as another motivating factor 🙂

SPACE

The staff at the UWS location could not be more welcoming and accommodating. There are two studios (one of them has windows and great views, which is a major plus!), a large locker room with everything that you need to shower/blow dry, and merchandise if your shirt/leggings didn’t quite make it in your bag.
