Remember when you felt like you were sneaking in through the back door of a luxury hotel to get your Cyc fix? Well fitness friends, those days are now behind us! Cyc has officially reopened this fall within the modern and sleek BSC Labs studio on Boylston Street. And if our class with Jill Graczyk is any indication, they’re back with a vengeance!

For those that are familiar with BFX’s Ride Republic studio, it’s gotten quite the face lift. The room is now about 2/3 the size, housing 41 bikes, with a more intimate feel (re: no awkward poles to get stuck behind in this studio). The sound system is intense, and perfectly necessary for their beat-based class. In addition to complimentary shoes (and ear plugs which we were debating using for the first time), riders have all the same amenities that BSC Labs offers – including ample lockers, showers and towels.

RUNDOWN

WORKOUT

Cyc puts two unique touches on your typical spin class to make it their own; mostly in the weight training portion of the ride. I respect that, trying to stand out in the sea of spin classes in Boston ain’t an easy task.

The first is that they have three weight segments, yes three, get those arms ready to feel the burn. And the second is a refreshed terminology drawn from sports training during the weight movements. For example, a “”chest press”” is referred to as a “”basketball chest pass””. As former athletes we respect this. It made the movements more relatable and easy to execute. It didn’t stop at basketball, we swam (freestyle and backstroke), boxed (jabs and uppercuts), and rowed. Don’t think that sounds hard? Try doing most of it while peddling out of the saddle.

INSTRUCTOR

Jill brought a contagious energy that was as electric as her highlighter yellow spin shoes! We were a fan of all the quick-hit bursts of speed, climbs & core work – including plenty of tap backs and single arm holds out in 3rd position. The choreography was challenging, but Jill’s cues & playlist were timely & on-point, making it easy to stay with the pack. If you’re looking for a morning pick me up, skip the coffee & sign-up for a class with Jill on the podium.
